Home Trends 2011

It’s the beginning of the year and along with the resolutions and “fresh start” the New Year offers, it’s also when trends are forecasted on home design.  So, as I scowered design blogs and magazines, here are a few of the trends that caught my eye.

A popular trend is the smaller home.  The days of the “McMansion” are over.  Many buyers are opting for well thought out floor plans, details and character.

Another trend showing itself everywhere is the color gray.  From clothes to upholstering fabrics to wall and trim color, gray is everywhere.  This color with hues from warm to cool has proven to be an elegant and sophisticated choice for wall colors and even cabinets.  I hope to see more of this!

The trend of combining refined and rustic furniture pieces is sticking around.  This design trend creates character.  The table in the photo below is over 200 years old and is reclaimed from a barn.  It makes a gorgeous table mixed with the sleek chairs and light.

One trend I’m particularly fond of is black painted woodwork.  Black is one of the most sophisticated colors and used as an accent will not make a room dark and gloomy.  The trick is to use a high gloss paint and to pair it with a light wall.  From a black door, crown molding and baseboards to stair treads and cabinetry.
